Gearing for Confinement: Preparing Your Baby List

Motherhood is a great experience which one must be prepared for. Towards the latter stage of pregnancy, a woman goes through a state of nesting. Primal instincts start to kick in and we start to prepare for the imminent arrival of our little one. However, it is always better to plan what mother and baby care products to use and understand your options for newborn baby clothing and accessories before finalizing your baby supplies list.

Newborn clothing items require consideration of a number of factors including the weather and the mother’s preference. For instance, if your baby is due during warm and dry seasons, it is better to dress the baby in cloth nappies and open back baby shirts as this will allow for greater ventilation. However, mothers with other children may opt for disposable diapers as it is a convenient option especially if the other siblings are still very young and dependent.

Important clothing items for the hospital list for the newborn baby:

•    30-50 cloth nappies (depending on the weather conditions as drying clothes is a hassle in rainy season)
•    Nappy pins
•    10 baby shirts
•    2 sets of baby booties and mittens for colder weather
•    10-20 blankets (depending on the choice of cloth nappies or diapers)
•    2 to 3 onesies which are one piece bodysuits with a clasp at the crotch providing easy access for diaper change.
•    A pack of disposable diapers
•    A pack of baby wipes
•    A baby bag to carry the newborn baby’s items in.

Next to consider are the bathing and grooming supplies.
•    These include the different baby care products including bath, lotion, cologne, oil, a small comb or soft brush and a nappy rash cream or powder. Remember it is always better to consult a doctor before purchasing a nappy rash cream/ powder as these constitute as medications.
•    Bath tub (though some hospitals provide this)
•    Two bowls for cleaning baby after motions
•    A bag of cotton balls to wipe the baby after motions.
•    A flask to keep water warm to wipe the baby.
•    One separate bowl or cup with a small hole to bathe the baby as this controls the flow of water pouring on the baby’s head.
•    3 to 4 bath towels,
•    A baby nail cutter and scissor.
•    Nappy wash powder and Dettol liquid.

Once the baby arrives home a different baby supplies list is necessary. These include:
•    Baby pram
•    Baby Carrier/sling which is convenient to carry the baby while on the go.
•    Baby cot: Inclusive of pillows, cases, mattresses, cot sheets, cot bumpers and a net. It would be better to reduce pillows and use a cotbumper which can be secured to the cot rail and reduce the hazard of suffocation.

Finally on the baby supplies agenda are feeding essentials. Exclusive breast feeding is recommended for minimum 6 months. Further to that alternative feeding can be considered with specialist advice especially if the mother is working. The basic requirements include:
•    4 to 6 feeding bottles
•    A sterilizer
•    A bottle cleaner

Once the baby is five to six months doctors might recommend semisolids. In that case the following will be required:
•    Baby bowl/plate or and Easy feeder which might offer more convenience.
•    2 to 3 spoons
•    2 to 3 bibs
•    Feeding chair

In addition to the baby care products there are some mother care items required by Mom to take to hospital when the due date arrives. These are:
•    3 to 4 feeding bras. It is important to consider a good fit and comfort as the wrong choice will only accentuate the swelling and discomfort that breast feeding may bring.
•    4 to 5 bed jackets or front open tops. These are recommended as it is less of a choking hazard especially for newborns as they cannot hold up the blouse/shirt themselves and this can block the baby’s nose while the baby feeds
•    2 to 3 cloths or cheetha redi which are easy to  wear especially if the birth is through C-section
•    A pack of loop sanitary napkins.
•    Moms toiletries

Mom needs a few other essentials for when she gets home. These include:
•    Breast pads
•    Nursing covers offer mom her privacy to feed in public places.
•    Breast pump (preferably manual). Moms getting back to work will find this particularly useful as they can express milk and refrigerate.

On a final note, it is important to prepare the items necessary for the hospital stay as you set into the third trimester. Having said that, relax and breathe. Your little gift from heaven will be arriving before long to warm your heart.

Congrats Mom and good luck!
